Activity

The Functional Neurosurgery Center deals with the study and surgical treatment of Movement Disorders (Parkinson's disease, dystonic syndromes, tremor of different origins), spasticity, drug-resistant epilepsy, neurovascular conflict (trigeminal neuralgia, facial hemispasm).

The Functional Neurosurgery Center is "Regional Reference Center for the Surgical Treatment of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders" (DGR No. 38-13744 of 25/10/2004).

The sector of excellence is represented by the neuromodulation techniques for drug-resistant epilepsy treatment (VNS), and Movement Disorders treatment, in particular Parkinson's disease (deep brain stimulation - DBS).

The neurosurgical procedures of deep brain stimulation are aimed to positioning small electrodes with stereotactic technique in specific brain areas. These electrodes, fed by a pulse generator (pacemaker) positioned at the thoracic level, are able to restore normal electrical activity of basal ganglia circuits. This activity is carried out in cooperation with the Neurological Clinic 2 directed by prof. L. Lopiano.

The research activity in the field of deep brain stimulation concerns patient selection criteria, surgical technique, the study and standardization of stimulation parameters, the clinical and neuropsychological follow-up, the mechanism of action of DBS.

In collaboration with prof. F. Benedetti and prof. L. Lopiano we also study the neurobiological correlates of the placebo effect in the human motor system in Parkinson's disease.
