Synaptic Organization and Development

Activity

We are interested in the mechanisms that regulate the development and plasticity of synapses in the central nervous system. Our group studies GABA synapses, that are the main inhibitory synapses in the brain. Using genetically modified animals and "high-resolution imaging" techniques, we analyze the role of GABA receptors, adhesion molecules and structural proteins in synaptogenesis. At the same time, we study synaptic defects in mouse models of neurological disorders, including multiple sclerosis (in collaboration with Annalisa Buffo), Rett Syndrome (in collaboration with Maurizio Giustetto) and muscular dystrophies.

Group’s ECR Sectors:

LS5_1 - Neuroanatomy and neurophysiology

LS5_2 - Molecular and cellular neuroscience

LS5_3 - Neurochemistry and neuropharmacology
